Benoni

Benoni

The well-known city of Benoni is situated on the East Rand of Gauteng, South Africa. The name "Benoni", translated from Hebrew, means "son of my sorrow", and the town has become synonymous with South African celebrities Charlize Theron and Charlene Wittstock, Princess of Monaco.

Benoni is a large suburb situated alongside the N12 Highway, and forms part of the Greater Johannesburg region. In 2000, Benoni became part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

In 1887, gold was discovered in the area, leading to the official founding of Benoni in 1904. Over time, gold mining has decreased, placing more emphasis on the business industry as the primary job sector of Benoni. Other towns of the East Rand such as Springs, Nigel and Brakpan rely on the commercial and business facilities of Benoni with many office parks located here.

Benoni is a diverse city, housing over six hundred thousand residents of every race and religious denomination within suburbs such as Daveyton, Lakefield, Brentwood Park, and Actonville. This Gauteng area offers more than 30 parks with scenic walks, nature trails and first-class sporting facilities.

In addition to the outdoor entertainment available, residents can visit several shopping malls including the Emperor’s Palace Casino and Carnival City Casino, which can be reached by car within 20 minutes.
