South African property owners and investors need to be patient as submissions for the proposed Municipal Property Rates Bill are being assessed.
The Bill was sent to Parliament at the end of August.
The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs told Property24 that it is currently in the process of assessing all submissions received and the process will take some time before a final decision is made.
In July, the deputy minister for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Yunus Carrim said the proposed bill still needed to be revisited and aggressively discussed before any decision is taken.
When news of the proposed Bill broke early in July, property investors, owners and industry practitioners expressed concern over the implications that may arise should the amendment be passed into law.
Comments and objections on the proposed Bill closed on 22 July.
This department now has a new minister, Richard Baloyi who was Minister of Public Service and Administration.
His appointment was announced during President Jacob Zuma’s cabinet reshuffling which saw Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, then minister of Public Works fired from the national executive of the South African government. – Denise Mhlanga
