Contrary to the stereotype of darkest Africa, South Africa is not high on the list of the most dangerous places to visit, according to a report.
The Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice an NGO in Mexico released a 2011 report entitled 50 Most Violent Cities in the World.

It revealed that San Pedro Sula in Honduras is the most violent city in the world followed by Ciudad Juarez in Mexico, Maceió in Brazil, Acapulco in Mexico and Central District in Honduras as the top five violent cities.
Four of South Africa’s cities made it to the list and what may come as a surprise to many is that the City of Johannesburg is ranked number 50, not so violent after all.
The Mother City, Cape Town is ranked number 34 most violent city in the world and most violent of all South African cities on the list, beating Johannesburg located in the Gauteng Province dubbed Gangsters’ Paradise (GP).
Port Elizabeth is ranked number 41 while Durban is number 49 on the list of the 50 Most Violent Cities in the World.
Jan le Roux, chief executive officer of Leapfrog Property Group says Johannesburg maintains that this location is great for doing business.
“One could hope that people’s perspectives on how dangerous it is might be altered, even if ever so slightly by the news that it’s not quite Sodom and Gomorrah.”
He says Johannesburg is a fantastic city brimming with opportunities for entrepreneurs and it vibrates with energy making it a great place to live.
Le Roux notes that the first prize would be not having any area of South Africa on the violent list, however, the silver lining might be that prospective property buyers will take another look at Johannesburg.
He says the report focused on urban areas with more than 300 000 inhabitants where murder statistics are available.
The council then looked at the murder rate per 100 000 people.
He adds that the top five cities are in Mexico and in fact, 40 of the 50 most dangerous cities are all in Latin America. – Denise Mhlanga
