Award winning architecture and design firm Don Albert & Partners is set to receive the Corobrik South African Institute of Architecture (SAIA) Award of Merit for the design of the Proud Heritage Clothing Campus in
Briardene on 16 February 2008 at the
Durban ICC.
This prestigious accolade comes less than four months after being awarded the Kwa-Zulu Natal Institute of Architecture (KZ-NIA) Award for Architecture in November 2007. The KZ-NIA Awards programme is a biennial ceremony with award winning projects being forwarded to the South African Institute of Architecture (SAIA) Awards of Merit and Excellence.
Deborah Preller, former President of the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIFA) and member of the 2007 judging panel for KZ-NIA Awards explains: "We were introduced to the work of a young and very capable architect who appears to think logically, clearly and creatively, combining vibrant, sleek administrative spaces with practical ideas. I salute this young designer who convinces owners of industrial premises to transform their work-horse buildings into sculptural elements, when these could so easily have been the usual unimaginative industrial complexes."
The Proud Heritage Clothing Campus is a 15,000m2 design and distribution centre that is constructed of custom-made split-concrete blocks to match the surrounding shale landscape, and is capped by an off-white floating roof, under which flowing walls wobble in the manner of the modernists.
Originally from the Kwa-Zulu Natal South Coast, Don Albert is renowned for his internationally published projects including the award-winning Millennium Tower (Port Control Tower for the National Ports Authority, Durban), and the
highperformancentre,
South Africa's first tertiary sporting academy at the University of
Pretoria.
Don Albert & Partners specialises in progressive architecture, urban design, and interiors and is based in
Cape Town, with branch offices in Pretoria and Durban.
