With homes becoming increasingly smaller, the concept of multipurpose furniture is becoming ever more desirable.
Anton Odendaal from Rochester explains that when furniture performs more than one function, homeowners can include fewer, more select pieces and free up valuable floor space.
Multipurpose furniture, also known as modular furniture, allows us to live comfortably in smaller, more efficient dwellings. Common similarities of this type of furniture include its ability to expand when required and shrink back depending on the user’s needs.
It should be able to serve more than one function at once, and it should be able to transform itself seamlessly in order to serve another function entirely.
Odendaal notes that contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be uncomfortable just because you live in a small home. “By choosing the right pieces, your home can be as lusciously comfortable as you want it to be." He says the beauty about decorating a small living space, is that you don’t need a lot of furniture, so you can choose a few pieces that make a statement in themselves.
How to pick a piece
Try and choose a sofa that is compact and has personal comfort, style and flexibility. Make sure it has been designed specially for smaller living spaces such as apartments or studio living.
The sofa will usually comprise of three modular pieces that can be positioned for various arrangements. It can be arranged to form a single corner suite, or it can be arranged into a three-seater sofa and a chaise, or it can be turned into a double bed with a separate single-seater.
Some sofas, such as the Jamie JR from Rochester have the upholstered arms that can be lifted out to be replaced by a timber shelf with adjustable height. This shelf can be used for added storage, as well as being a convenient place to rest your coffee, controls or reading material – taking the place of the traditional coffee table.
A home bar is a wonderful addition to any home – however it is very costly to install, and it takes up a lot of space. For homeowners with less space and a smaller budget, why not consider including a drinks cabinet instead?
The Patrone Drinks Cabinet from Rochester for example, is compact when closed and stands as a slick piece of furniture. Although it is evident that the bottom half of the cabinet offers enough space to store up to 24 bottles of wine, it is only when this piece is opened that it transforms into a mini home bar.
Coffee tables are very useful pieces of furniture – no living room would be complete without one. However, what if a coffee table could double-up as extra seating when it is required. A common dilemma for entertaining friends and family in a smaller living room is that the sofa usually can’t accommodate more than four or five people at once.
Why not invest in a few ottomans. These make great additional seating, as well as handy side tables. Just be sure to buy ones upholstered in a tough leather material, as they will be easier to clean if something is spilt.
Just because you happen to live in a small space doesn't mean that you have to cram it will furniture, or hardly have any furniture at all. It simply means that you need to take more time to find what fits in with the space and your style.
